What to Look For in Walking Shoes for Women 50+, According to Podiatrists

“For summer, look for breathable mesh uppers, perforations, and a lighter outsole,” says Dr. Mike Breslin, a podiatrist and CEO of CEO of Pro Med DME. “Weight, flexibility, and traction are also important for warm weather walking.”

Physical therapist Bryan Wright also notes that custom orthotics have helped by correcting walking patterns and relieving pain in feet, knees and lower back. “For summer, mesh uppers and lighter soles allow ventilation and prevent overheating,” he adds. Both Dr. Breslin and Wright explains that staying hydrated and also seeking moisture-wicking socks will improve comfort, too.

What to Avoid in Walking Shoes for Women 50+, According to Podiatrists

For women over 50, it’s essential to stay away from shoes with platforms, and shoes that offer no heel support. Bulky heels can prompt falls and sprains, which can be even more painful post-menopause. Also avoid walking shoes that are too hard and lack cushioning — experts explain that your feet should feel balanced and supported throughout the shoe. The top rule is to avoid those that don’t have a perfect fit. “Walking is a great form of exercise, so find shoes that fit well and suit your needs,” Dr. Breslin reminds.
